NASA Retires Legendary DC-8 Airborne Science Lab After 37 Years of Service

For over 37 years, NASA has operated a specially modified Douglas DC-8 airliner as an airborne science laboratory, conducting missions that enabled experiments impossible at ground level. Earlier this month, the DC-8 made its final flight from NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in California to an airfield near Idaho State University. Instead of being scrapped, the aircraft will retire at the university, aiding in the training of future aircraft technicians through a hands-on maintenance program.

The DC-8 played a crucial role as a flying science lab, gathering data for experiments that supported the global scientific community, including federal, state, academic, and international researchers. It was used for sensor development, satellite sensor verification, space vehicle tracking, and studies of Earth's surface and atmosphere. The aircraft could collect data at various altitudes and perform remote sensing, contributing to numerous scientific disciplines like hydrology, meteorology, biology, and cryospheric sciences.

Following its final mission in April, the DC-8's retirement was planned, and today it took off for the last time. After departing Edwards Air Force Base, the jet ascended to 21,000 feet before descending and landing in Idaho. Although the DC-8's era has ended, NASA plans to continue its airborne laboratory program with a Boeing 777-200ER, acquired for $30 million, set to replace the DC-8 later this year.

FAA Faces Critical Shortage of 3,000 Air Traffic Controllers

Despite a surge in hiring last year, the Federal Aviation Administration remains 3,000 air traffic controllers short, leading to flight delays and safety concerns. The FAA currently has about 11,500 controllers but needs over 14,600 to fully staff towers and centers. This shortage has drawn criticism from airlines, air traffic controllers, and watchdogs.

Last year, the FAA hired 1,512 new candidates, just above its goal, but lost over 1,300 employees, resulting in a net gain of about 160 workers. The union reported an increase of only six new controllers after departures. The FAA aims to hire 1,800 controllers this year, though the effectiveness of the hiring system remains in question.

A major aviation policy bill requires the FAA to maximize hiring and install additional simulators to speed up training. Current understaffing forces many controllers to work overtime, prompting the FAA to increase minimum rest standards to 10 hours between shifts. These measures aim to address the staffing shortage and improve safety in the air traffic control system.

The U.S. has the most private jets. Who is number two?

The use of private jets has surged in recent years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, as elite passengers sought flexible and comfortable travel options amid commercial flight restrictions. This increased demand has led to a significant rise in the number of active private jets. Currently, there are an estimated 22,000 business aircraft worldwide, with the global private jet market projected to reach $36.94 billion by 2028.

The United States dominates the private jet market, boasting nearly 15,000 private jets, which account for approximately 67% of the global total. Texas and Florida are leading states, with Houston and Dallas ranking as the top cities for private jet registrations. The US private jet fleet includes a mix of heavy, long-range aircraft, light jets, and very light jets, catering to various travel needs. This robust market is reflected in the high domestic private jet traffic, which significantly exceeds international flights.

Other countries also show notable private jet ownership, with Brazil ranking second with over 775 private jets, and Mexico and Canada following. Germany leads in Europe with around 496 jets. The global trend indicates a shift towards increased personal and corporate private jet use, highlighting the expanding market and growing preference for private aviation.
