NASA and Industry to Design a More Sustainable Jet Engine Core

NASA, in collaboration with industry partners, is embarking on the next phase of designing a revolutionary jet engine concept aimed at the next generation of ultra-efficient airliners. This project, part of NASA’s Sustainable Flight National Partnership, involves developing a small core for a hybrid-electric turbofan jet engine. The new engine is expected to reduce fuel burn by 10% compared to current models, significantly improving fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

The Hybrid Thermally Efficient Core (HyTEC) project has completed its first phase, which focused on selecting the right component technologies and exploring innovative materials and advanced aerodynamics to withstand higher temperatures and pressures. Phase 2 will involve designing, building, and testing a compact core in collaboration with GE Aerospace.

HyTEC's advancements will be critical in transitioning this innovative technology to industry for future sustainable airliners. As Kathleen Mondino from GE Aerospace noted, the project builds on a long history of collaboration between NASA and GE Aerospace to advance aviation technologies. China, India Could Drive Private Jet Sales Over Next 20 Years

Airbus projects that China and India will significantly drive jet sales over the next two decades, expecting the global commercial fleet to double by 2043. According to Airbus's Global Market Forecast, the number of aircraft will increase from 24,240 to 48,230, with 45% of new deliveries aimed at replacing older, less fuel-efficient planes. This growth is attributed to the expanding middle class and increased international travel in these regions, as seen with IndiGo's substantial aircraft orders and Air India's efforts to enhance its fleet and services.

The demand for new jets in China and India underscores the rapid economic growth and rising affluence in these countries. Indian carriers, notably IndiGo, have placed significant orders, including their first long-haul jets, to meet the soaring demand for air travel. This trend is further supported by India's privatized Air India, which is actively expanding its fleet to boost its network. Airbus's forecast highlights the importance of these markets in the global aviation landscape, particularly as Western airlines face more challenging market conditions.

Amid this optimistic outlook for China and India, Airbus and its rival Boeing are grappling with production challenges. Additionally, some Western airlines like Lufthansa and Delta are revising profit expectations due to rising costs and intense fare competition. Nevertheless, the International Air Transport Association notes strong pent-up demand for cross-border travel in Asia, with the region projected to generate significant profits.

First Transition Flight for Midnight eVTOL

On June 12, Archer Aviation announced a major milestone for its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, Midnight. The aircraft successfully completed its first transition flight, moving from vertical takeoff to wing-borne flight, on June 8 at the Archer Aviation test facility in Salinas, California.

This transition marks a significant achievement in the development of eVTOL technology, showcasing Midnight's ability to carry substantial payloads and reach speeds over 100 miles per hour. This milestone follows the transition flight of Archer's smaller eVTOL, Maker, which achieved a similar feat in November 2022.
